My Cover for Bill Bruegman's "MODEL & TOY COLLECTOR",
Issue #12, 1989. 1st Printing. All Characters © 1989 DC Comics.

As well as working with JOE ORLANDO at DC Comics, it was with MICHAEL LUCK & his "New Breed", where I received a good deal of training. Luck had various Publishers he was connecting with, & made available an eclectic assortment of jobs to be done. One of the Magazines I contributed a good deal of Illos. to, was JEFF GOMEZ' "GATEWAYS". Luck would even get a complete Comic to produce, & the New Breed Artists would take turns doing pages. There was a time we were rushed to complete a whole book, only to have the Publisher back out & not pay us, after we finished the 28 or so pages. It was like a bad joke after all the hard work, & making us get it done by a certain date. It was never Published. Despite all the aggravation & bad deals, it gave me a chance to hone my skills.

Illo. for "BlackHawks" article from Jeff Gomez' "GATEWAYS",
Issue #8, 1988. Characters © 1988 DC Comics.

In 1988, I discovered Bill Bruegman's "TOY SCOUTS" Catalogue, offering old Toys & Memorabilia from the 1950's-70's. I was amazed to see all these vintage rarieties in beautiful, mostly unplayed-with, condition. Bruegman also published "MODEL & TOY COLLECTOR", a fan-oriented mag focusing on "Baby Boomer" Model Kits & Toys. Luck & I started to do artwork for the mag, & wound up Editing & Art Directing the 1989 Special "Batman" Issue #12. We wrote articles & designed the whole issue in exchange for old toys from the 60's. It was a labor of love & that issue secured Newstand & Store Distribution for Bruegman. It was re-issued in a thicker page count format with a new cover painted by Luck.

When Orlando had us return to DC with our "NEW OUTSIDERS" work, he said it was decided that we were going to focus on just one of the Characters, called, "The Wraith". JOEY CAVALIERI made a design sheet & gave it to me, & Luck & I were told to return soon with "Wraith" Model Sheets & Story Ideas.
